5 Reasons I’m Thankful for My Corgi

I love Corgis. I really do! Years ago, my husband and I drove several hours on a cold February night to see if a handsome Corgi would be the right dog for us. It took us all of 2.5 seconds to realize that Rooney was exactly the dog we needed. The day we adopted Rooney was one of our happiest days, and I am so grateful to be a Corg-mom. Therefore, today I would like to share with you the reasons I am thankful for having a Pembroke Welsh Corgi in my life:

1) I am thankful for their Smarts

Corgis are a herding breed, and as a result, they are easy to train and willing to work. Currently, I am working on teaching Rooney to retrieve my socks before we go for a walk, which based on his ability to learn quickly, won't take me too long. Herding breeds have a natural drive to work, which can get them in trouble if they aren't provided with the right outlet for their mental and physical energy.

2) I am thankful for their Size

Rooney fit all of the criteria my husband and I were looking for in a dog. We wanted a dog that was big enough to not be considered a toy or small breed, while also small enough that he wasn't overwhelming for our 600 square foot apartment. At just 27lbs, Rooney is the perfect size for us, and our lifestyle. He also doesn't take up too much room on the bed!

3) I am thankful for their Durability

In addition to having a dog that isn't too small, I wanted a dog that was strong enough to accompany me when I run, hike and swim. Rooney does not disappoint. Not only does he love to go for a short run, but he is always game for a hike, and you simply can't keep him out of the water.

4) I am thankful for their Personality

Corgis have an abundance of personality, which includes everything from their affectionate nature to their playful faces. Rooney loves to walk with me and loves to take naps. Rooney loves welcoming guests in our home, and playing with children. In addition to all the affection and sweet personality, Rooney has spunk. So much spunk, that my husband and I spend the better part of every day laughing at Rooney and his general shenanigans.

5) I am thankful for their Low-maintenance Style

Not only are they a low-profile dog (haha, get it?), but they are also low-maintenance when it comes to grooming. They have short to medium coats that don't require much more than regular baths and a quick brushing. I have done all of Rooney's grooming at home over the years. With the right brush and shampoo, there is no reason you can't do the same for your Corgi.

Most of all, I am thankful just to have Rooney. He is the perfect dog for us and brings our family so much love and joy.

Why are you thankful for your dog?
