Bomb-Sniffing Dog Layka Adopted by Soldier

As we celebrate the July 4th holiday here in the U.S., we think not only of the soldiers that have fought for our independence in the past, but of those who serve our country now, including our military dogs.

Meet Layka. She served as a bomb-sniffing dog in Afghanistan.  During her last tour of duty, Layka was shot four times by enemy forces. Despite her injury, she subdued the shooter and saved not only her handler, but the other servicemen taking part in the mission. After a long fight, Layka was reunited with Staff Sgt. Julian McDonald – her handler – and even helped train other military dogs.
