Sheep-Dog Trials: Family Friendly and Fun!
The Ring of Kerry is a 179-km-long circular tourist route in County Kerry, Ireland that has attracted visitors for hundreds of years. With natural beauty, it is a center for outdoor activities that include golf, water-sports, cycling, walking, running, and more. There is, however, another unusual outdoor attraction on four legs. At Caitins Bar and Hostel, visitors can watch and learn how real shepherds train their sheep dogs to, well, herd sheep!
Adjacent to Caitins is the Kells Sheep Centre, run by Brendan Ferris, an award-winning shepherd and sheep dog trainer. Ferris gives a fascinating demonstration of how sheep dogs are used to bring in the sheep on real farms. Responding to his whistled commands, the dogs guide the sheep downwards. By the end of the demonstration all the sheep are calmly gathered in a pen beside you. The demonstration is concluded with a lively question-and-answer session. Visitors can also pat and examine the sheep.
